One reason oil and gas careers can offer attractive earning opportunities is that the work is often located where energy development and infrastructure projects are active—not necessarily where a candidate currently lives.
Understand rotational schedules
Some field employers use rotations such as two weeks on and two weeks off. Others may use different on/off patterns, extended hitches, conventional weekly schedules or project-specific arrangements. Never assume a rotation from the job title alone; confirm it with the employer.
Separate “travel” from “relocation”
A travel position may allow you to maintain your current home while reporting to distant job sites. A relocation position may expect you to move closer to the operation. Ask whether the job is permanent at one location or moves between projects.
Ask who pays for what
Before accepting a position, understand whether the employer provides or reimburses transportation, lodging, per diem, meals or relocation expenses. These benefits vary significantly and should not be assumed unless they are stated in the offer.
Look at total compensation
Base hourly pay is only part of the picture. Depending on the employer and position, overtime, shift differentials, bonuses, benefits or allowances may affect total compensation. Evaluate the written offer rather than relying on advertised earning potential alone.
Consider the personal side
A two-week rotation can mean extended time away from home. Think about transportation, family responsibilities, pets, housing and other obligations before committing. A schedule that works well for one person may not work for another.
Get the details in writing
Before making a major move or spending money based on a job, verify the employer, position, work location and compensation terms. Be cautious about anyone demanding unusual upfront payments as a condition of employment.
